Not a trap. If it were a snare it would likely only be one foot, not both. I’m very certain this poor animal lost its limbs in a barbed wire fence, which causes many horrific injuries to animals and livestock. Fun fact: Many bucks with deformed antlers are that way because a barbed wire fence castrated them, and the resulting loss of testosterone triggered abnormal growth.
Also to those curious: this deer was shot by a hunter, who photographed his injuries. He was indeed put out of his misery

Fences cause a lot of damage to WTD
Yeah I’m gonna say barbed wire. Deer can actually pull out a foothold trap in most cases, due to the tapering shape and smooth texture of their hooves, slide right out the jaws. Even if one’s held, they can be released. Some years back, I even had a deer fire one and it left the trap fine, just left behind tracks at my set.
Snares also are supposed to have deer stops on them too, so if snares, most cases they can also pull their leg right out and leave.
Deer stops prevent total closure of the snare loop, so if a deer is snagged, they can step right out.
What I think happened, is he was caught in barbed wire for quite some time and someone released him (you see videos of this often and sometimes the deer are a bloody mess and probably needed medical attention but were simply released to face likely infection later on) , however, his injuries were extensive enough he got infection and the flesh and hooves rotted off.
